Mysterious Santarcangelo:
the hidden underground city

Journey back in time, through a maze of tunnels to discover ancient legends and exciting stories.

Guided Tours

Visit the public monumental cave and Casamatta (archaeological area)

An undiscovered underground city, an unsolved mystery hidden in the bowels of the earth…

Visit the public monumental “grotto” (underground cave)

Santarcangelo hides a mysterious, underground history. The whole hill, it is built on, is criss-crossed by an intriguing, complex network of tunnels, caves and wells forming a kind of “underground” city beneath the main town, made up of at least 160 “grottoes” (caves).
Don’t miss the guided tour inside the monumental public cave (Amati/Contradina) as you journey through a labyrinth, to discover ancient legends and exciting stories. Allow your imagination to take you back in time to the ancient religious rites and solemn processions inside this evocative atmosphere.

Gradually, you will be sure that you can smell the intoxicating scent of Sangiovese (the red wine of Romagna), aged and stored in ancient barrels. It’s an unforgettable experience! The tour can be enriched by including a visit to a mysterious private cave (Felici), located in the heart of the medieval citadel (read more under “Tickets & Bookings”).

Comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing are recommended as it is quite cool inside, just 13° C all year round.
Please note that the path within the archaeological area is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. However, access to the public cave is possible.
Dogs are generally allowed if they are small to medium in size and of calm temperament.
